This video, produced by Evelyn Jain, MD, CCFP, IBCLC; is intended to aid the
physician in identifying tongue-tie and performing frenotomy. It demonstrates
a comprehensive method of assessment of the impact of tongue-tie on breastfeeding,
as well as a follow up management plan for the lactation consultant.
Dr. Jain
is a family physician and lactation specialist in Calgary, Canada. She is director
of the Lakeview Breastfeeding Clinic, a referral centre for more difficult breastfeeding
problems, and educational centre for health professionals involved in lactation.
She has published research on breastfeeding, and has written many articles in
the professional and lay press. An internationally known speaker, she gives presentations
to health professionals on tongue-tie and many other aspects of breastfeeding.
She is a clinical Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of
Calgary.
Immediately after her talk and video demonstration at the ILCA Conference
in 1994, Dr. Jain received many requests for her tongue-tie video. In an effort
to accommodate these wishes she produced a more comprehensive video which will
be helpful to all health professionals, physicians, LCs and nurses who are involved
with helping breastfeeding mothers.
This video will help you recognize tongue-tie
and the problems resulting from it. You will learn to determine whether a lingual
frenulum is affecting breastfeeding. A complete assessment method encompassing
impact of tongue-tie and the safety and advisability of release are shown. Frenotomy
(release of the lingual frenulum) is demonstrated.
